Investigations - Oscillococcinum
What is Oscillococcinum?
Oscillococcinum (anas barbariae hepatis et cordis extractum) is a homeopathic product manufactured by Boiron USA, Inc., which claims the product temporarily reduces flu-like symptoms, such as feeling run-down, headaches, body aches, chills, and fever.
Oscillococcinum consists of freshly-killed duck heart and liver that is incubated for forty days. The resultant solution is then filtered, freeze-dried, rehydrated, diluted 200 times at a ratio of 1:100 for each dilution, and impregnated into sugar tablets. Oscillococcinum comes in two forms, an original formula and a children's formula.
Boiron advertises Oscillococcinum as a first-line of defense in treating the flu and flu-like symptoms.
Oscillococcinum is sold in many retail locations nationwide, including Acme, CVS, Discount Drug Mart, Giant Eagle, K-Mart, Kroger, Lowes, Marsh, Medicine Shoppe, Meijer, Rite Aid, Vitamin Shoppe, Walgreens, and Wal-Mart.
What are the legal and medical issues with Oscillococcinum?
The FDA requires that homeopathic products, like Oscillococcinum, meet the standards of the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States ("HPUS") and its supplements and describes the manner in which homeopathic products must be labeled. However, the FDA does not require either that homeopathic products be proven to be safe and effective for their intended use.
A review of the scientific studies performed on Oscilococcinum to date have found that the data produced in those studies are not strong enough to make a general recommendation to use Oscillococcinum for first-line treatment of influenza and influenza-like syndrome.
Do you have a potential claim?
